Night photo of Largo do Pelourinho in full moon..
The José de Alencar square in also known as Largo do Pelourinho. Both names fit. Firstly, Pelourinho was the place where slaves were punished and secondly, José de Alencar was a supporter for slavery.
Antônio Vieira used to preach in that square. He was a fierce anti-slavery supporter. Despite his support of the Dutch occupation, the first is a good reason for having his name on a square in Salvador. It’s a pity it did not happen, yet.
On the right side one can see the chruch of Nossa Senhora do Rosário, that was built by the slaves in their spare time.
